Self-Assessment #3

One of the biggest real-world topics that I am passionate about is providing education for areas that could not afford it. This is an issue that occurs in areas that are not as privileged to have the budget required to afford school. Another version of this problem occurs when the schools that are provided as an alternative for these under-priveleged areas are not up to par and therefore can prevent them from achieving their maximum learning potential. These youths are affected by the lack of education in their lives, which prevents them from achieving job opportunities or finding their true interests.

In my Ethical Philosophy Selector Results, I share the most similarities with Thomas Aquinas. He held the belief that all life has purpose, and achieving such purpose allows one to be happy. When it come to education, it can allow individuals to find their purpose and help them realize what they want to do in their future. Therefore, it gives them a purpose. Without education, it could be argued that underprivileged youths are not happy because they are not able to discover what drives their interests and desires.

After taking my TalentThemes test, I definitely found more similarities between my passion for real-world issues and the results. One my traits was being charitable and caring. When thinking about youth who have been denied the possibility of growing up with a passion, a part of me really wants to move forward and try to help them out. I want to be able to give them all the schools they want so they can all discover their passions and become as happy as they can be. This is the charitable side of me. The caring part of me is the one who wants to even take initiative and sees this as a legitimate issue.

The sources of power that contribute to this issue are primarily government funding and their decisions as to where the funds should be distributed. Sometimes the budget is spent more on infrastructure, handling debt, or war, rather than an emphasis on education. Education can be left behind when the discussion of budget distribution comes back into play. Therefore, youth can stay underprivileged in their areas for a long time, without ever having a proper education.

In my service action proposal, I would want to focus more on raising money for a specific area that has a school, which does not have complete resources. Students cannot learn if they do not have the tools or necessary supplies to learn. This information about budgeting is crucial in helping people understand what the national government has neglected in terms of education budgeting, and what action should be taken to prevent this from happening.

Relational Leadership connects with social responsibility because it is up to a leader to take initiative and work to improve their society. If everyone were to be passive, no progression would be made in our community and it would eventually fall into disarray. It is up to people who care about those who are underprivileged in order to help them out of their situation and make a life that is functional for them. Communities, such as the ILV, are made with the intention to take initiative against degrading societal factors in order to promote general welfare and a worldwide initiative.
